DAVID ROY PARSONS,DAVE SOROKA
On moving to Vancouver from Ottawa in the late 90’s David Roy Parsons
began recording his original songs, as well as other local musicians’ in his living room studio. Amongst others, Joey Only’s album “Radical Folk of The Great North” were recorded in Dave’s living room studio.
With the release of David’s 2007 album “Matters Of Survival” he began to tour across the country, and became a festival regular at Northern BC’s Artswells Festival where his songs became regular jam staples. On
Halloween 2011 he released his fourth cd at Vancouver’s Railway Club with his newly formed band The Radishes.
“His lyrics remind me of John Donne, and his melodies are undeniable. He's sophisticated and straightforward at the same time, like Hank Williams. If you care about songwriting, don't deny yourself the pleasure of listening to this man.” --Geoff Berner [Mint Records recording artist]
Dave Soroka lives in Grand Forks, right down on the US border, and has been writing songs since 1969 when he got my first guitar at 15.An Army brat, grew up on bases in Kingston Ontario,Calgary and Camp Wainwright Alberta, with a few years in between where we lived like civilians in a house Dad bought in Chilliwack. In the summer we would come to Grand Forks to visit grandparents and cousins, and call Grand Forks my home town.
Worked as a section man on the Canadian Pacific Railway, pulled boards on the green chain for Pope And Talbot, loaded boxcars and driven a boom boat for MacMillan Bloedel on Vancouver Island...but for the most part he has been self-employed all his adult life, doing things like carpet cleaning, delivering flyers, painting houses, washing vinyl siding, roadside sales... whatever it takes...
I have three kids and three grandkids so far. I was a deadbeat dad so I can't brag about how they've all turned out, but they're all beautiful.
To date I've written about a thousand songs, many of whose tunes I've forgotten, so now when I perform I'll sometimes just speak them as poetry, with other songs mixed in which I accompany with my guitar and sometimes harmonica.
I've recorded a number of CDs. The one that people seem to like the best so far is called The Ladies Of Summer.
As far as my goals for my art: I just want the listener to feel some of what I feel.
"If you haven't heard him, well, you should!"
Lionel Conant, Music On The Mountain Festival
...a mythical figure in the Canadian indi music scene..."
Paul Crawford:
...rock 'n' roll poet, modern muse, beat poet of the 21st century..." James Moore, Radio Curlew:
..These are songs that speak of the back alley poet, sung from the heart.."
